Micromechanics of Composites with Integrated Shear Thickening Fluids

چکیده
Shear thickening fluids (STFs) are typically composed of a concentrated stabilized dispersion of rigid sub-micron particles in a carrier fluid and show a marked increase in viscosity beyond a critical shear rate [1]. It has been demonstrated that STFs can be integrated in dynamically loaded structures to tailor their damping and stiffness properties [2]. Potential applications are alpine skis where STFs can be used to damp low frequencies at high amplitude deformation known to deteriorate the ski-snow contact. In this paper, a micromechanical approach to is used study the effect of STFs interfaces on damping of unidirectional (UD) composites.

Analytical solutions for predicting tensile and in-plane shear strengths of triaxial weave fabric composites
This paper deals with new analytical solutions to predict tensile and in-plane shear strengths of triaxial weave fabric (TWF) composites accounting for the interaction between angularly interlacing yarns. The triaxial yarns in three directions of 0 ° and ±60 ° in micromechanical unit cell (UC) are idealized as the curved beams with a path depicted by using sinusoidal shape functions. The tensil...
متن کاملTime-periodic Electroosmotic Flow of Non-newtonian Fluids in Microchannels
The alternating current electroosmotic flow of a non-Newtonian power-law fluid is studied in a circular microchannel. A numerical method is employed to solve the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann and the momentum equations. The main parameters which affect the flow field are the flow behavior index, the dimensionless zeta potential and the dimensionless frequency. At very low dimensionless frequenci...
متن کاملSimulating the Dynamic Behavior of Shear Thickening Fluids
While significant research has been dedicated to the simulation of fluids, not much attention has been given to exploring new interesting behavior that can be generated with the different types of non-Newtonian fluids with non-constant viscosity. Going in this direction, this paper introduces a computational model for simulating the interesting phenomena observed in non-Newtonian shear thickeni...
متن کاملDesign and evaluation of a linear damper working with MR shear thickening fluids
Magnetorheological (MR) materials and shear thickening fluids are both smart material and their combination could offer both MR and ST effects. This study looks at the properties and behaviour of magnetorheological shear thickening fluid (MRSTF) in particular whilst applied as a semi-active energy absorber. A device with two forms of varying vibration control has been created and measured. The ...
متن کاملModelling the effective elasto-plastic properties of unidirectional composites reinforced by fibre bundles under transverse tension and shear loading
The effect of fibre bundling on the effective transverse properties of unidirectional fibre composites has been investigated by way of finite element method and micromechanics models of fibre bundles. Based on the micromechanical model of single-fibre composites, plane strain models for composites reinforced by fibre bundles are presented. The effective elasto-plastic stress /strain behaviour w...
